Dental Implants: A Step-by-Step Guide
Welcome to our guide on dental implants! Dental implants are a reliable and long-lasting solution for missing teeth, and we want to make sure you understand the entire process.
Here’s a simple breakdown of each step involved:
1. Initial Consultation and CBCT Scan
The journey to a perfect smile starts with an initial consultation. During this visit, we’ll discuss your dental health, evaluate your needs, and determine if dental implants are the right choice for you. To get a detailed view of your jawbone and surrounding structures, we’ll take a Cone Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT) scan. This 3D imaging helps us plan the placement of the implants with precision.
2. First Stage of the Surgery
In the first stage of implant surgery, we place the titanium implant into your jawbone. This implant acts as the root of the missing tooth. The procedure is usually performed under local anesthesia to ensure comfort, but we also offer IV sedation for those who prefer a more relaxed experience or have anxiety about the procedure. Once the implant is placed, we may cover it with a protective cap and stitch up the area.
3. Healing Period and Osseointegration
After the implant is placed, a healing period of 4-6 months is necessary. This time allows for a process called osseointegration, where the implant gradually fuses with your jawbone. Osseointegration is crucial for ensuring that the implant is securely anchored and can support a replacement tooth effectively. This healing period is essential for the long-term success of the implant.

4. Second Stage of the Surgery: Impressions and Shade Selection
Once the osseointegration process is complete, we schedule the second stage of surgery. During this appointment, we will expose the implant and attach a healing abutment. The healing abutment helps shape the gum tissue around the implant and prepares it for the final restoration.
In the same visit, we also take a detailed impression of your mouth to create a custom crown that will fit perfectly on the implant. We’ll also select the shade of the crown to match your natural teeth, ensuring a seamless and natural appearance.
5. Choosing the Right Implant Crown
There are two main types of implant crowns:
Screw-Retained Crowns: These are attached to the implant with a screw and can be easily removed if needed. They’re often preferred for their ease of access and adjustment.
Cement-Retained Crowns: These crowns are fixed in place with dental cement and are chosen for their ability to provide a more aesthetic result with fewer visible connections.
Both types of crowns offer excellent durability and function, and we’ll help you choose the one that best suits your needs and preferences.
